Library Corner: What is beauty?

what is beauty?

I picked up this book (What Is Beauty?: New Definitions from the Fashion Vanguard by Dorothy Shefer) on a whim, mainly because I liked the title. I’m not overly enamoured with it, so i’ll just give you some pics and a couple of quotes that I like.

what is beauty?

“style is more interesting to me than beauty. Style is about panache, and about embracing individuality [ ] – celebrating uniqueness not conformity” Isabella Rossellini

what is beauty?

” Fashion and beauty are outward manifestations of an inner need we have to expres and reinvent ourselves. They also enable us to redefine the borders between ourselves and our culture. Anti-fashion [he’s talking here about grunge as a reaction against 80s excesses] is, ultimately, not fashion at all, since it has become just another trend which has nothing to do with individual style. Perhaps the real definition of ‘cutting-edge’ is to be found in the ability to take the kind of personal risks that ultimately push our society forward.” Richard Buckley

Wow! That elephant on it’s rear legs is beautiful! Hehehe. Shame you don’t like the book more. You could so much with the subject.

I think the caption that went with he elephant picture was that even the ugliest animal is beautiful to its mother. 🙂 which somewhat unfairly anthropomorphosises animals I feel, but anyway…

I agree its a fascinating subject and Id love to read somthing of substance about it. This book unfortunately didnt have that. It was also very 1990s centric and kept talking about supermodels and had TONS of pictures of them with their boobs out.
