Help me out: nail polish recommendations?

My nail polish 'collection'

What you see above is my nail polish ‘collection’ in it’s entirety. I’ve never really been into nail polish much, and usually just paint my fingernails with the clear stuff and in summer my toe nails the creamy colour (which I’ve had for a bout 4 years). The red polish was actually free with a magazine last month, and for years I just had the other two. But I had a chip on one of my fingers, and because I kept seeing it I kept picking at it. So I decided to cover it up with colour to give it a chance to grow out. Which worked. And now I’m kind of into the idea of painted fingernails, and would like to get another colour, probably an opaque white, to go with the dress I’ll be wearing at my sister’s wedding in a month.

Since I’m not big into beauty stuff, and really know nothing about these things, I thought I’d ask you all to recommend good nail polish brands. Anyone have any favourites? Has anyone tried No.7? To what extend is it worth spending extra on more expensive ones?

Thanks in advance my dears!

I like bourjois, they have good applicators that make it easy to put the stuff on. Nowt wrong with No.7 though!

Since it will last a couple of years, I always buy a good brand. They just stay on longer. My favourite is "An Affair in Red Square" by OPI.

Different brands seem to interact differently with different people's body chemistry: a brand that lasts a week on one person may chip in less than a day on others. Experiment a bit! Some companies offer inexpensive sample sizes, which can give you a chance to try something out without much financial commitment.

Definitely invest in a decent base coat and top coat: they'll help the color stay on without chipping for longer, and the base coat will protect your nails from polish stains a bit. I use Creative Design's Stickey [sic] and Super Shiney [ditto], but I've also heard good things about Zoya's Color Lock system.

For brands, I like OPI and Zoya. OPI seems to last longer on my nails, but Zoya has a better color selection. If you've gotten reliable wear from the Sally Hansen clear coat, though, maybe you should try some of their colored polishes.

I like OPI and MAC. They last a long time and have a very pretty sheen to it.

I agree with Fashion Theorist about different polishes for different people… But if you're looking for a glossy, very-fast-drying top coat, I adore Essie's Good to Go. It's a little pricey, but the best I've found and always seems to extend my manicure.

I like OPI and yu can't eat Essie for pale colors. However, if you are going to a special occasion, go get a manicure!

I like Sally Hansen and OPI, but more than the brand I think the biggest thing that made me into a fairly-often-polished lady is quick drying drops. The thing I hate the most about painting my nails is waiting around for them to dry before I touch anything. I have some Orly drops and OPI has them too (although they're more expensive). You polish, put on a few drops, and then 5 minutes later you're ready to go.

Sounds like I should check out OPI! They are not sold retail in the UK I don't think, but I think I remember seeing them in one of these Sally wholesale shops.

I didn't even know Sally Hansen do coloured varnish, I've only ever seen the various 'grow your nails' type ones. I've never heard of Essie, I wonder if it's available in the UK. I shall investigate!

I really love O.P.I. and Essie, these are my two favourite brands. they're not cheap but also not too expensive and the colour range of both brands is amazing!

I always shop them here because it's cheaper than in local shops:

oh and yep, in most cases it#s worth spending some more bucks on naik polish because the cheapest ones chip after one day or so.

I wish I could help but I'm silly and just a brand name and then go with a color that blinds me. It is worth spending a little more. I hate it when you don't and then it chips or it doesn't dry fast enough. (I always seem to have to go to the bathroom or have to sneeze right after I put the polish on and then I have to do it all over again.) You have a really great blog here, by the way. It's nice to meet another artist.

Essie is definitely my favorite band of nail polish. I do have a cherry red by Sally Hansen that I love also.

OPI and Zoya are great. And last a long time.

I would have to say OPI too but no brand ever stands the test of time, they're all equally crap!

I have the worst luck with fingernail polish. For years I wore Covergirl Cherry Rain on my toes. Then I switched to Covergirl Juicy Tomato for summers. Revlon worked well too, I bought it specifically for it's name: Frankly Scarlet.
But nothing, and I mean nothing, would keep polish on my fingernails. I just stuck with toes since fingernails were such a headache. Always chipping and flaking and never drying. I have no idea what is up with my fingers, but they keep polish wet much longer than most people's.
Loreal was the one brand that I found that works with my freaky deaky fingers. I've never tried OPI, but I think I must after all your reader comments!
