Vintage photo inspiration: a day at the races

It was Royal Ascot Ladies day last week, and I came across this wonderful collection of vintage photos of posh lords and ladies, and later famous and ‘normal’ people too, showing off their outfits while also watching a race or two. Even though the 1970s one with all the multi-coloured bricks is amazing I prefer the older ones I think – the 1933 one is my absolute favourite. It’s almost quite modern looking with the big shoulders, isn’t it?

Which is your favourite?

I’ve been to the races only once, in York. I had no idea what to expect dress-wise but for some unknown reason, rather than playing it safe with something LBD-y, I decided to wear a green polka dot dress, purple tights and brown converse boots. As we were walking towards the ground, and most people were dressed in full high-heels-and-fascinator get up, I did worry they weren’t gonna let me in. In the end though, turned out that our tickets were for the cheapy bit in the centre of the actual track, where most people weren’t dressed up. I had a great day in in the sun in the end, and walked away with a £3 profit I think (£1 bets all the way, yeah!).

Also, here’s a funny article by Tanya Gold about Ascot, if you fancy a chuckle.

Love 1933 and 48. I can't wait to go to ladies day at the local race course. I am planning my outfit and fascinator already. Such a fun day and good chance to get dressed up.

I have never been to the races. The one near us – The Grand National – is always freezing and I think my look would get photographed for all the wrong reasons.

Surprisingly, I like the 70s one. Looks like candy. Yum!
