20.8.10: tentative pattern mixing

skunkfunk dress

jacket detail

A casual Friday outfit. I may have mentioned this before, I’m finding this dress really hard to wear in different ways. Despite my boldness with colours I’m finding pattern mixing really hard to do and this dress is just so, well, pattern-ey. And it’s got this interesting asymmetrical draping that I don’t want to disturb with a horizontal belt. So I always wear it pretty much on its own, with neutral things.

But anyway, I’ve been wearing that blazer all the time recently, and put in on just as a jacket to keep warm, rather than as a thought out part of the outfit. But then it turned out that that really works! It picks up the blue of the tights and it’s even a tiny little bit pattern mix-ey!

dress – skunkfunk
jacket – charity shop
shoes – schuh
earrings – used to be my mum’s

Yes, it does work! I know, pattern mixing can be hard with a bold print. Most of my mixing has been with small stripes on stripes, polka dots with polka dots, or stripes with polka dots. Nothing crazy. We should all be bold and try for some crazy patterns, eh?

    LOVE that blazer!!

It really does work – the stripiness of the blazer works with the wider stripiness of the green dress and it all comes together nicely.

Franca, I truly love the color of your tights with that dress. I can't quite tell if they're gray or a dark turquoise, but they look superb.

love your pattern mixing choice. I agree it can be difficult to do beyond the floral/polka dots and stripes. But I think sometimes it needs to really clash to make it eyecatching.

I think you're pulling off the pattern mixing with panache. Rules are there to be broken!
