This was what I wore to host a ‘Ladies Afternoon tea party’, which was basically a pot luck party but with baked goods. And in the afternoon. With ladies. We basically stuffed ourselves with yummy things, and then watched Strictly Come Dancing. It was great, and I hope to be doing it again soon!
I made three things, all semi practice for the wedding (I’m planning on making my own cake:
* a giant vanilla and chocolate chip cupcake. I got one of those giant moulds, but I never made enough batter to actually fill it up. This was the second time I made it and I used 600g of flour this time and still it didn’t even fill up the bottom mould! (it comes in two parts) I also never got a chance to ice it, so it didn’t look particularly pretty, but it did taste nice. You can just about see the edge of it on the second picture.
* pink lemonade cupcakes, ie.e lemon flavour but with red food dye so they were super pink on the inside. You can’t really see it here. I froze a couple and they defrosted fine (I tried and failed with chocolate before, it went a bit floury after defrosting), so this recipe is a keeper.
* red velvet and chocolate chip cupcakes. Really they were just meant to be chocolate, but I got a bit carried away with the food dye.
My outfit was vaguely 50s Connecticut housewife. I bought that apron ages ago, but this was the first time I wore it in public! I almost did before, but chickened out!
dress, apron – charity shop
brooch – accessorize
shoes – clarks
When I did the invite for the afternoon, I called the event Cake or Death after the Eddie Izzard sketch. A few people didn’t know where that came from (shock! horror!), so if you’re new to the magical world of everyones’s favourite action transvestite, this is as good an intro as any:
