Dress

new shoesies

This is the dress I mentioned when I was interviewed on Retro Chick, six weeks ago now! I was saving it up for Friday night and two of my friends’ birthday celebrations. I love the patchwork design and the ‘I like you America’ print, I wonder where it came from. I’m pretty sure the dress is from the eighties (it wasn’t expesive, but there are no labels so I actually have no idea. I wore my crinoline under it. The overall effect is a bit like those Japanese Lolita girls, don’t you think? Though not as costumey.

Also, apologies for the rubbish photo. I didn’t get ready until after it got dark, which is aboput 6p.m. now. I thought I could photoshop this up properly, but I should have just bitten the bullet and switched on the flash. You live and learn I suppose.

dress – Dolly Mix vintage shop in Leicester, I love that place!
crinoline (not seen) – etsy
shoesies – clarks
bag (annoyingly also not seen) charity shop

You look so super cute! I love that silhouette on you.

i'm wondering if maybe the dress is late 70s….maybe it has some connection to the bicentennial? that was '76. plus that faux patchwork print pretty much screams 1970s. to me anyway!

That print is adorable! The "I like you America" part is so interesting. I would be really curious to find out where it came from.
Also, I LOVE your bedspread! I was just on the Orla Kiely website drooling over prints like that.

Hmm.. I am gettinbg more and more tempted with a crinoline myself. I keep looking at them online and being indecisive.

Eeek! What a cool dress. I'd guess it's eighties too, maybe hand made if there's no labels? Anyway, it really suits you. Hope you had a fun night!

tricia- now that I look at it, the fabric does look very seventies! I thought it was probably 80s because it's a 50s shape and you get a lot of 80s 50s style stuff. And the price, I've found that most vintage shops start marking up everything 70s and older, and this was nice and reasonable. I actually checked again last night, and I now think that the dress was probably handmade, so it could be virtually any age. Either way, I love it!

Love the dress, beautiful colours that go so well with your skin.
It could be 50s or 80s, I do not know, but ist is so wonderful, who cares????????????.
Did you know that you still have the WORD VERIFICATION???

oh, no argument/criticism, it's a very cute dress! i'm just a geek for that kind of stuff, dating things/trying to figure out when they were made and why. ;P

in the US we were pretty obsessed with the 50s in the 1970s, in a pop culture sort of way. example: films like "grease" and "american graffiti", for starters.

now that i think about it some, it's kind of interesting how influences from the past merge with current cultural trends…in many if not all of the past decades. i can see the 1930s being a big influence in the 1970s as well…just like say, the 70s, 80s and 90s are to fashion (etc.) today.

anyway, sorry for the diversion. 😛

Oooh, that's lovely! It really suits you, I love the shape.

  • Amber 16 October 2010, 11:01 am

I absolutely adore the "I like you, America!" bit: for some reason that just really tickles me 🙂 Love the shape and print, too, of course – it's so different, and the yellow tights work so well with it!

  • Pull Your Socks Up! 16 October 2010, 12:53 pm

I had a dress like that with a similar patchwork-style print when I was a 70s child. If I could find another one (like yours!) I would snaffle it up and wear it constantly!

  • Katie 19 October 2010, 9:54 am

What an amazing dress! That print is something incredibly special – I'm not surprised you were looking forward to wearing it.
