Handmade winter coats

If you know me, you may know that I love coats. I have many ( well, 7) and therefore I’m not allowing myself to buy one this year, sadly. But I couldn’t resist having a little look online at all the things I am missing. There’s some lovely stuff in the high street, but after buying coats from next and from h&m last year and then seeing the same ones on everyone and their dog, I thought that if I were to buy a coat this year, I would buy a nice handmade one off etsy, supporting independent sellers and making sure to get something unique.

None of these are particularly cheap but many are priced similarly to mid-range high street shops, and after all, a coat is an investment piece, and if the Lady Grey sew-along is anything to go by, takes a fantastical amount of preparation and skill. And all of them are luverrly! So, I’ve not given myself an upper price limit – this is fantasy shopping after all!

Plaid and swingy

Embellished purple

White with gathered sleeves

Yellow with bows

Bubble hem

Asymmetrical with a big collar

Little grey riding hood

Ruby red wrap

Which one would you choose if money was no object?

A tie between the plaid one and the little grey riding hood one… I made a winter coat once, and I might make an aviator jacket this winter!

The big collar but it's wool anyway.

For me the winner is plaid and swingy. And if I have to have a second coice: little grey ridindng hood.

It's a tie between the asymmetrical with big collar and bubble hem. Beautiful and dramatic!

The grey one, I love it, I've seen it before and it's really gorgeous!!!

    Definitely Little grey riding hood!

Ditto the lady above, I'd have Little Grey Riding Hood, but maybe in brown if that was an option!

You've definitely got an eye for a chic coat, lady! The Little Grey Riding Coat is gorgeous. This winter I was determined not to buy one in black…and I am now very happy with my new purple number. A coat can lift any outfit, don't you think?

My favourites are the first one and the second-last one. They make me wish the weather weren't heading towards Summer here!

The plaid one is really lovely. I love yellow, and now I want that yellow coat. I have a lot of winter coats but one more can't hurt right? ;o)

I know this is a post from last year, but I googled for ‘handmade coats’ – did you not notice that the majority of the coats you picked from Etsy are obviously either resellers or Chinese stores? So, you wouldn’t be supporting ‘handmade’ and ‘indie artists’ – you’d be buying rubbish from people who take advantage of Etsy, and sell low price crap made in sweatshops.

Not everything is as it seems at a glance!
