orange and pistachio polenta cake; recipes, food, foodie, baking, cake, sweet
Orange and pistachio polenta cake. This is seriously the best cake I have ever made! I am not baking anything until I have lost those two pesky Christmas kilos but once I do, I’ll be making lots of variations of this. First thng I’ll be trying is substituting the pistachios with rasberries.

mango, red pepper and coconut rice salad, recipes, food, foodie, salad, healthy, vegetarian, fresh
Mango and coconut rice salad. From Yotam Ottolenghi’s book Plenty. This book is amazing! If you think that vegetarian food is a bit too healthy, bland and pulse-based, then this book will change your mind. Expect loads more from this book in the future! Oh, and Ottolenghi writes the New Vegetarian column in the Guardian Saturday magazine, where a lot of these recipes originated.

pancakes stuffed with salsify parmesan veg
Pancakes stuffed with salsify parmesan veg. One of my mum’s standard recipes. (This I made over Christmas at my parents’ house, hence the 1970s table cloth). It’s got salsify in glasses in it, which you cannot get for love nor money in the UK. I was even prepared to try make the salsify fresh (this is labour intensive, as the roots have black skin that dyes anything it touches black) but couldn’t even find them at the farmers market. They do sometimes have salsify in posh restaurants though, so maybe one day I will find it somewhere.

baked apples
Baked Apples with amaretto filling.

broccoli and gorgonzola pie
Broccoli, leek and gorgonzola pie. Also from Plenty. I can never get pies to look good in the photos.

    Thanks!

Salsify is a long thin root vegetable. It's white and fairly solid, with
black skin (it's called black root in german). The stuff in jars is slightly
pickled, and has the consistency of palm hearts (is that just wnother weird
thing?). I think it is most commonly used in French and German food. This is
    the wikipedia entry:

If you find it you should try it, and i'll be very jealous!
