I’m slowly catching up with my stored up outfits! This is what I wore for NYE, to go to our friend’s house just outside Edinburgh. We were going out onto the beach for the fireworks, so my outfit needed to be warm and suitable for mud as well as nice of course! So I wore a variation of what I had worn several times before. That blouse just makes such an impact on its own, you don’t need anything else.

blouse – people tree
jeans – charity shop
boots – esprit
belt – from a skirt
necklace – used to be Dave’s granny’s
hat – gift

New hat

new hat

Though I did wear this hat of course! It was dave’s Christmas present for me, we chose it together. It’s from a local hat makers shop, fabhatrix. I love it. I have found the mass produced bucket hats you can get in shops to be far too big for my head, so this handmade, unique thing is just perfect for my small head.It was pricey, but I reckon I’ve got it down to about £3 a wear already (my aim is £1 a wear or less).

It has got a mixed reception. Lots of people have told me they like it, but one of my ex colleagues, not the most tactful at the best of times, said ‘oh! comedy hat!’ when he saw it lying on my desk, and my old boss keeps telling me I look like Mary Poppins! Which is clearly wrong because these are the two hats she wears in the film, neither of which are anything remotely similar:

I think its more Paddington Bear myself, but obviously a much more glamorous version!

Either way, I’m happy!

    Mary Poppins?!
Seriously, some people should remain quiet if they have nothing nice to say, specially if you did not ask for an opinion.
For what it's worth, I like it and you look good AND happy wearing it 🙂
I hope to get it to one cent per wear, those are the items we enjoy the most.

Oh, I adore hats! And this one is fabulous, great choice! Never mind people who don't have a clue about what looks good. This hat on your head certainly does.

Well I really like your hat! Love that you had it made specially for you, very stylish and individual! The best items are the ones that last and your hat definitely will.

I think that hat is adorable on you! I love it! And now I'm thinking about orange marmalade… 🙂

I absolutely adore the blouse. I love, love puff sleeves so much. I have been watching 40s films lately and all the sleeves were puff.

It is definitely more Paddington than Mary Poppins, and I think it really suits you! I think a lot of people are funny about hats – I know I always get comments from my colleagues when I wear a hat. I love the blouse as well – the off-centred buttons look great.

Those puff sleeves look glorious on you and you really suit hats. Mary Poppins? Some people have the strangest of ideas. xxx

Haha, I like the Paddington Bear comparison. 🙂 I think this hat is adorable on you.

Lovely outfit – those are some serious shoulders. And nice hat!

(weird, I couldn't add a comment earlier, but now that there are a couple already, suddenly I can…)

    I love that hat!

I tend to wear all kinds of hats, berets etc virtually every day; I even have special ones that still fit when I wear my hair in a bun.

Oddly, the first year or so people commented from time to time (usually in a positive way, sometimes just… oddly), but now I haven't had a comment in years, not from strangers either; it's like the hats look more 'natural' on me now, or I carry myself differently, or something.

That blouse is absolutely amazing!! And I love your hat (I love hats soooo much!).

I also just so happen to love Mary Poppins and Paddington Bear! 😉

Great outfit, GORGEOUS hat! Not every head can wear a hat and yours certainly CAN and SHOULD! Ooh I love hats.

There's a woman at my work who seems to be utterly oblivious to everything 99% of the time and occasionally will look at me and say something like "You're almost like something from the 1950s!".

    ALMOST. Haha!

We have to be brave to be ourselves but it feels so good!

Yeah, not a Mary Poppins hat. And what is a comedy hat?

Anyway, I love the hat! It's very you.

Paddington Bear! I like that comparison. Cartoon references aside, the hat is really gorgeous. It looks terrific on you. As does that blouse. Wow. I'm awed by it every time you share it.

Haha, that's hilarious! Some people are just a bit odd.

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 8:14 am

I can totally see that – if you wear a thing all the time it sort of become
    part of you!

sorry about the disqus btw, its not the most reliable system, but the
benefits outweigh the problems for me. I have a post scheduled about that
    later actually!
