Outfit with shirtdress and jeans, and friend friday

IMG_3675 copy

IMG_3680 copy

Thank you for your well wishes for my rsi on yesterdays post! Wrist still muchly painful and no real improvement after 4 days, so today is again left hand typed and all lowercase. its probably going to be another two weeks at least. i am going to do friend friday though, but first, an outfit.

This is a pretty standard work outfit for me, the shirtdress is one of the things i wear constantly but rarely photograph. i really just wanted to do an outfit post with the new glasses!

dress and jeans – h and m
short necklace – used to be my mum’s
long necklace – the blue balloon on etsy
shoes – hush puppies
belt – came with a skirt

And now onto friend friday. the theme this week is technology.

1. What technology do you use in blogging? (computer, camera, video camera, tripod, etc…)

I use my laptop, camera (canon powershot sx 200 is, which also has not bad video options) and tripod. I also check comments on my android phone, and use it to take photos with the vignette app.

2. What computer and online technology do you use? (blogging system, photo storage, photo editing tools, etc..)

My blog is hosted by blogger. i do intend to move to self hosted wordpress at some point, but at the moment im busy with studying and wedding planning. when i do it i want to be properly prepared. i actually think blogger is fine, my main issue with it is the clunky commenting system, for which i have disqus installed, although as i said before that is far from ideal.

I edit photos in potatoshop, and host them through flickr. i love flickr, thats how i first got into blogging, through the wardrobe remix group.

3. What is your process for taking pictures?

I take them on self timer, either with my tripod at home, or balanced on the windowsill in a meeting room during my lunch break at work. i have my camera set on taking five pictures at a time, and typically i will take about 15 photos in total so i can chose the best one once i get onto the computer.

4. When it comes to backdrops for your photos what do you consider? Do you scout locations or shoot the same spot daily?

About 95% of my photos are taken against the back wall of my living room, or in one of the work conference rooms. while i enjoy editorial style photos with exciting locations on other people’s blogs, it isnt for me and i have no intention of doing anything like that, even if i had the time.

Probably because i come from wardrobe remix, my approach is very much about documenting what i actually wore on a given day, to actually do stuff. plus, im not a daily oufit blogger, i only take pictures of outfits that i think are special and interesting, so i prefer plain backgrounds to let the outfit shine.

Also, i am way to embarrassed to take pictures where there is anyobe watching! i used to take outdoor ones with my tripod, but edinburgh can get v windy, and i ruined a camera when the tripod was blown over and it landed on its lense, so now i am weary of even going outdoors!

5. If you could splurge and get one new piece of equipment what would you be buying?

I’ll probably buy an slr at some point, but again only once i have time to actually teach myself how to use it.

What about you, duckies? do you prefer outfit documentation or editorial style outfit bloggers?

A roundup of this week’s answers can be found here.

I love a frock over pants and I love how that outfit totally accentuates your waist and I love your new specs. What's not to love!!! xxx

  • Clare B 28 January 2011, 9:12 am

I agree with Misfits – the shirt-dress is great. I'd be wearing is a lot too. As for technology, I pretty much stick with my trusty MacBook for blogging and my camera (Canon 400D).

I like real blogs that show what real people are wearing every day. Not that I expect people to post every single day (heaven knows I don't), but I just don't want people to be afraid to post the outfits that they don't consider to be blog-worthy. Take the bad with the good.

I do like your photos in the conference room, I think they're fun! It makes you look so professional. πŸ™‚

Love the shirt dress over jeans – I might have to try it πŸ™‚ I have a very similar from H&M too!

It's interesting this week to find out the technology etc behind everyone's blogs. And how everyone else goes about taking their outfit shots. It seems to vary quite a bit.

Happy Friday Franca! Hope your wrist is feeling better soon πŸ™‚

LOVE the outfit. That necklace is fantastic!

In terms of documentation or editorials, I like a bit of a mix (and I think I have a bit of a mix on my blog). I adore gorgeous photos, so I am drawn to some of the editorials, but I also love blogs that feel "real" (ack! Back to the authenticity issue!), and document their daily style, which is not editorial for most people. My more "photoshoot"-esque posts come from the weekend, when I have a private forest all to myself to shoot in, but for day-to-day shots I'm usually in my apartment or outside, in our courtyard.

    Such great proportions here!

  • flyingfabu 28 January 2011, 3:18 pm

So sorry to hear about your RSI. I had it badly for years and can feel your pain.

Dig the new glasses, they're both stylish and flattering. I just ordered a pair yesterday, I normally wear contacts but really need to alternate, given how much time I spend in from on "technology"! Hope the weekend gets your wrists the rest they need and thank you for taking the time to post. Not only was "potatoshop" the most endearing auto-correct but it gave me a reason to chuckle while still barely awake.

  • Veshoevius 28 January 2011, 3:21 pm

Oh no! That must have been terrible seeing your camera being blown over. I thought the whole idea of tripods was to avoid damaging the camera by perching it on something – obviously this doesn't apply in the wind!

Sorry to hear you have RSI – think I'm possibly getting some too! So is that your office meeting room in the photo? Do your work colleagues know you take photos in there?
I love the little watch necklace!

  • Rad 28 January 2011, 4:13 pm

This is a great look. I've never thought of a shirt dress over bootcut/flared jeans, but you've convinced me.
Also, I prefer documentation pictures, mostly because some of the editorial style ones don't show the details of the outfits as well. Your living room is so bright and lovely.
Also, your photos look about as nice as a SLR. You're doing it right.

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 6:03 pm

it was very upsetting! i probably didn't put its legs wide enough but yeah,
it gets so windy. gale force not uncommon!

if you are starting to get rsi, my advice is to rest now before it gets
worse! it really is not fun!

yeah, that is the conference room. some of my colleagues who read the blog/i
am friends with on fb with know, but most don't. i sneak in when its empty!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 6:03 pm

oh man, i really hope it doesn't go on for ages!

i always say photoshop = potatoshop.

    how exciting about you glasses!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 6:03 pm

    thank you!

much as i dont like the real vs. fake thing, i do think there is something
more immediate about photos taken in everyday locations, that make you feel
you know the blogger. but of course, editorialness is great eye candy!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 6:03 pm

love a dress over jeans! im a nineties girl!

wrist is a we bit better. only hurts when i move it now, which is something!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 6:03 pm

i just use the inbuilt timer, nothing fancy! and thank you!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 6:03 pm

thank you! all this talk of cameras makes me want to buy an slr!

  • Joshylola 28 January 2011, 8:30 pm

    Nice shirt-dress, enjoy weekend

  • Katy_Rose1 28 January 2011, 8:55 pm

Wow this is dedication – you keep posting for FBFF even though you can only use your left hand. Good for you but hopefully it heals quickly so you will be fully functioning again in no time. – Katy

  • Ceri 28 January 2011, 9:11 pm

i have the same problem with outdoor photos, plus it just so much more time. I love your shirt dress, it has a great shape.

  • Shallowmallow 28 January 2011, 9:19 pm

    Such a lovely necklace πŸ™‚

I do like editorial style outfit posts but I still want the outfits to be something the blogger actually wears. Doesn't have to be on the day but those outfits need to be "real" for me to really enjoy them.

When the images are just pretend outfits the blogger wore for five minutes to pose with like a model it leaves me cold. I think you can usually tell whether someone is actually showing you their own closet's intestinal regions or is just playing dress up for the camera. But when someone has amazing style like you I'll be quite happy to see your sofa in the background any old time πŸ˜€ Your outfits are exciting enough!

  • Terri 29 January 2011, 3:09 am

why does a person need to choose between OOTD and editorials? Mine vary as my time allows. Very much like the little compass necklace.

  • moniquearielle 29 January 2011, 3:37 am

yay for a wedding! congratulations! and i love your shirt, i'm wishing for more pinstripes in my closet lately. πŸ™‚

  • Leia 30 January 2011, 6:50 am

I'm glad I'm not the only 'indoor' blogger! I feel too embarrassed to take pictures outside, even though the lighting is much more flattering and the backdrop is much more interesting.

  • Tracey 30 January 2011, 11:29 am

I love the glasses, and your shirt dress is wonderful with that belt!! (I'm also becoming exceedingly jealous of your necklace collection!) πŸ˜‰

I'm looking at a camera upgrade at the moment, so it's nice to find out how other bloggers make their photography happen! πŸ™‚

  • jesse.anne.o 31 January 2011, 3:05 am

I mainly like indoor photos because I think seeing people's homes is a perk (if they have a cute home) and I am mainly interested in what the outfit looks like on their body type. I also like outdoor shots but I do feel like *sometimes* they seem like they're trying too hard — I mean, seriously, I can't imagine taking the time out of my day most days to go pose outside somewhere, especially when it's cold! It's just not part of my value system with regards for time even if I really believed lighting and a varied background would be nicer. If I had to take the extra hour each time I wanted to go outside, walk to a spot where I could set up a camera to take a picture, set it up, take the pictures and come back home, I'd NEVER blog outfits.

  • oranges_and_apples 31 January 2011, 9:12 am

yay, a comment via disqus from you! i dont think ill ever be brave enough
for taking self timed pics in public!

  • oranges_and_apples 31 January 2011, 9:12 am

thanks! wedding is AGES away (september) so all very chilled!

  • oranges_and_apples 31 January 2011, 9:12 am

Oh, i dont think you have to choose at all, but most bloggers do seem to go
mainly for one or the other, dont they?

  • oranges_and_apples 31 January 2011, 9:12 am

oh thanks, thats what i'm aiming for! do you really think you can tell?

  • oranges_and_apples 31 January 2011, 9:12 am

  • oranges_and_apples 31 January 2011, 9:12 am

    i hope so too!

  • oranges_and_apples 31 January 2011, 9:12 am

yeah, i think unless youre really skilled, theres not that much of a
difference between a good point and shoot and an entry level slr. though it
would be nice for the focus to be only on me, with an unfocussed backdrop!

  • Daisydayz25 1 February 2011, 6:40 am

Love the dress your wearing and your compass necklace is great. Great answers to the questions too
