Wardrobe inventory project: Handbags – and a mini yard sale!

All my bags; handbag, bag, purse, tote, messenger, clutch

This post was actually planned and started before Christmas, but fits in well with everyone who has resolved to organise their wardrobe better for the new year – I know there were quite a few people who did Friend Friday on planning outfits last week who planned to do that! So:

These are all my handbags, totes and purses! Photographed and classified!

As I alluded to in my wardrobe organisation post from a year ago, all my bags are stored in a big, deep drawer. They were kind of a mess, and the drawer was getting full to overflowing. Which was why I embarked on on this little categorisation project!

I took these photos for myself, so that I would know what I’ve got, which is why they are mobile phone snaps taken in artifical lighting rather than properly lit photos. I was sort of planning on printing out a copy of all the pictures and get it laminated, so that instead of rummaging around in the drawer, I could look at that and select a bag. I haven’t done that so far, but it’s definitely been a useful exercise, because I had completely forgotten about some of my bags!

Here’s what I discovered I do have:

  • 1 and 2. My main leather bags, black and brown. These are basically the only handbags I use during the week.
  • 3 and 4. These I used to take to work before I bought the first two.
  • 5 to 11. decent sized over the shoulder bags. I do like a good long strap, so that I have me hands free
  • 12 to 15. Totes that fold up small. I don’t use these for food shopping (we have a stash of canvas bags for that), but for things like gym clothes, spare pair of shoes for work, lunch etc.
  • 16 to 23. Medium sized short handle bags of various levels of smartness
  • 24 to 33. Small going out bags
  • 34 and 35 Purses

What about everyone else? How do you store your bags and how many do you have? What kinds? Do you think 35 is a lot? If you have a lot, do you rotate them so that they all get used regurlarly, or do you have ‘regulars’ like me?

After taking my little inventory, I folded up and flattened down everything properly, which created some space in the drawer, which is nice. But I still think that there is too much there! I know some people have a lot more than this, but this is one part of my wardrobe I feel could do with some slimming down. Why do I have so many bags when I basically use 2 of them day to day?

Which brings me to the point of this post, other than showing all the bags that I have:

I am getting rid of some of these bags and I thought I’d offer them to my lovely blog friends! Like a bloggy yard sale!

$5/£3 a bag, plus whatever postage ends up costing (likely to be in the region of £2-3?), just a little something to make the trip to the post office worth my while. I’d also be open for trades. Here’s the ones I am letting go:

Miffy bag for yard sale

Miffy bag for yard sale
Little Miffy bag. Here’s a picture where I’m carrying it for scale.

Navy vintage bag for yard sale
Navy and vintage. If this was in better condition, I’d stick it on etsy for proper money, but the material (fake leather) is splitting quite a bit. It’s still lovely though! Worn picture here.

skunkfunk cotton tote for yard sale
Black skunkfunk tote. Thick cotton, and the strap is long enough to be worn across the body.

If you are interested, leave a comment and I’ll email you, or email me at franca(dot)likes(dot)apples(at)gmail(dot)com.

I also got rid of the grey army bag, but it was cheap to start off with, and heavy to ship, so I just gave this straight to the charity shop. Which is where the others will go if there are no takers, but I really hope someone will give these a good home! You never quite know what happens with things you donate to charity shops, do you, they might languish there for months and years!

And if this goes well, then I might do it again, and make some space for these two babies I’ve been lusting after!

I am trying to resist!

So much color! I love it. I'm also loving that second bag your lusting after.

  • Rad 17 January 2011, 4:55 pm

Ooh, I quite like number 11. I could always use another commuter bag. cohabitatingcloset [at] yahoo [dot] com.
I also love both those red bags.

Wow! I'm envious that you actually find ways to make use of all of your bags. I'm definitely a "carry it around until it falls apart" gal. The organization idea is inspiring – I don't have quite 35 bags but I do have quite a bundle of smaller bags – I really should inventory them myself and send a few off to the church shops near me.

Wow, that's quite a collection. I think I have about 5 to 6 bags, three of which are definitely self-made (and a little ratty around the edges by now). I'm planning to make another huge big weekend-getaway-sized tote bag soon, but I'm wavering on the fabric – because it would indeed be nice to buy a leather bag that will hold up for-ever!

    Cheers,

    Frohes Neues Jahr, btw.

Wow so many bags! So far I have only really got a few neutral bags although I am finding myself tempted more and more by statement bags. I don't have nearly as many bags as this, mine are all in a plastic box, the leather ones in cloth bags.

If the Skunkfunk bag's handle is long enough to wear messenger-style (on average-boobed body), I would love that one!

I've been lusting in an abstract way (I know it would be way too stiff & heavy & lacking pockets for me) after one of those satchels in the last picture, too, but that red one with the two pockets looks great also, and much more practical!

Hmmmm, not sure I dare to count my bags…
I've been culling the herd though, planning to put some nice ones up for sale a a local auction site.

And I'm currently waiting for a lovely vintage Samsonite flight bag from Etsy, which I am sure will be my Perfect Bag Forever! 😀

ich habe ca. 15 taschen, benutze aber regelmäßig auch nur etwas 5. einige sind jedoch für den sommer und einige für den winter. aber du hast mich inspiriert, meine taschensammlung auch mal wieder auszusortieren…

I do not own many bags. I just hang them to look at more that to wea. I always end up wearing the most comfortable.
This is a brilliant idea to let them go and make somebody else happy.

    I have ONE bag.

  • Shallowmallow 17 January 2011, 10:59 pm

hehe 🙂 I just had a massive spring clean this weekend (nearly done) and said fairwell to my Miffy bag 🙂 Seeing yours I am sort of longing for it back LOL

Most my bags are stored in a wicker basket sitting on a repurposed tv wall bracket in the bedroom which thanks to some furniture moving is now also a workable office (although less than 2 meters square and consisting mainly of piles of sellotape I don't think the desk area is quite worth photos yet LOL)

Mind you, cleaning up our cupboard under the stairs I found hundreds of bags for life..

Wow – look at all your lovely, colourful bags … I recently culled my own collection to make way for some new beauties. I think it's nice to periodically 'turn over' the wardrobe stock! 😉

They are all so cute and colorful! I love the variety you have. I have about 15 or so bags, and really only use 3 at the moment, but I'm not as creative when it comes to bags, thanks for some inspiration!

Hehe. I have another miffy bag, no 20, so I'm not quite letting go
completely. Actually when dave found out I was getting rid of the little
one, he said that it was always sad to see kids stuff in charity shops. So I
    really hope someone wants it!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 8:13 am

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am seriously surprised. I knew 35 bags was a lot, but I didn't think it was so far above average, and i was expecting there to be at least a few people with more! I'm pretty impressed with all you streamlined folk!

And actually, I just realised I forgot a bag:

So really, it was 36! eek!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 8:13 am

Oh, daran habe ich gar nicht gedacht, Sommertschen und Wintertaschen!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 8:13 am

I wish I had space to hang them up!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 8:13 am

The small ones are the hardest ones, because I don't use them much, but
they're only little and they can really make a going out outfit!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 8:13 am

I'm so surprised by this! I thought lots of people had this many!

  • oranges_and_apples 28 January 2011, 8:13 am

Thank you! I'm swaying towards the first one at the moment. I want both! But
    I won't get either!

Did you have any takers for the navy bag?
