Wedding updo – the trial version – and lots of vintage hair inspiration

I went to to get my hair put in an updo as a practice run for the wedding. It wasn’t technically a hair trial because apparently then they spend more time trying out different options and you don’t actually leave with a fully functioning updo. But I thought I might as well use the opportunity to get my hair done for a night out while I was there. The hair dresser was shocked and horrified that I was willing to have the same hair at my wedding that *I had had before*. Shocking! To be fair, she had never met me before and I didn’t really explain that I am not having a traditional wedding-dress-that-costs-a-grand type wedding, and once I showed her my actual dress and told her about my budgetty(ish) plans, she got it.

She did a great job, didn’t she? I totally love it I have such fine hair and not that much of it, but she really managed to create some volume! And it lasted all night when I went out! I think I will go with something like this but I also got some hair extensions that she can work in.

But in the mean time, here’s some fancy vintage updo styles for your delectation. People must have spent forever sitting around having these done!

All vintage photos from the Hair Archives.

Yay, it looks great! The other updos are amazing too but I imagine they must be very uncomfortable.

BEAUTIFUL! I love the updo! And it's so much fun seeing all those photos of vintage hair updos!

It looks gorgeous, and I think will be much less stressful for you knowing that it works! Those 60s styles are amazing but by crikey they must have been heavy xx

That is a really, really pretty hair-do.

Oh wow Franca, I love your wedding "do" so much!!!!  Adding the little flowers for a night out is such a lovely touch:).  What a silly woman she was to be horrified at the thought of "showing" your wedding style in public BEFORE the big day!!  Hope you had a great night out:) xo

That updo turned out great. It looks great on you!

    You look very pretty!

Your updo is just amazing.  Absolutely perfect.

And I love the vintage styles – it's amazing the amount of time women spent on their hair back then.  It definitely paid off though – those are some great updos!

Gorgeous! I love the little roses too 🙂
Hair extensions sound like a great idea for some extra volume – I wish I had thought of those for my wedding do. I asked my aunt to make me heidi braids but I really didn't have enough hair to pull it off properly but nevermind, the bride always looks awesome 😛

Yay for unconventional weddings 😀 When you don't plan out every minute detail you're bound to have a blast of a day. So sad when couples can't enjoy themselves for all the stress of everything being "just perfect"

SHOCKING! haha. That reaction from the stylist is so funny. I love that you made the most of this trial and the finished look is very pretty and feminine!

Some of those old hairdos that look so voluminous are all backcombing and hair spray.  I like this trial do, very very much.

It looks lovely! And accenting with the flowers is absolutely charming.

Vintage hair seriously blows my mind. Whenever I watch old movies I'm always at risk of being completely distracted by the hair. I really don't know how those women didn't…fall over more. Or get massive headaches!

So was mine, actually! She sprayed each strand *then* backcombed it. I
always thought of hairspray as the thing you put in at the end!

Your hair looks great, better than the vintage photos, although they are amazing too! Great idea to try it out before hand to see that it stays in. My friends all came down after an hour!

    That's a gorgeous do!

I agree she did an amazing job. I love the vintage inspiration and the result is very lovely. 🙂

I think the hair dresser did a marvelous job !
When I got married I did not look for hair styles I just asked the girl to part it on the side and put a bun I could place the veil at. If I were getting married now I'd BE SO MUCH MORE elaborate ….
