I’ve got a little request…

If you’re a blogger you may have heard that Google is getting rid of the Google Friend Connect widget for all non-Blogger hosted blogs. As I understand it, it’s basically a ploy by Google to get people to move over to Google plus. Now I do have a Google plus, but I admit I barely use it (I’m hoping they’ll let you automically synch your feed at some point), and I’m not about to invest time in it just because Google say so. That will just encourage them to try more of this kind of bullying!

Anyway, what this means for you as a reader is not yet clear. They’re not saying whether people’s GFS will be automatically be transferrred to their readers or not. It’s not being cancelled til the beginning of March, so hopefully things will become clearer nearer the time. But in the meantime I would encourage all GFC followers to switch over to following via a reader. So:

Please sign up to my feed with a reader of your choice: http://feeds.feedburner.com/OrangesAndApples!

Of course, you can also follow my posts on Facebook, Bloglovin, and by email (in the right hand side column about half way down) and you can keep up with me on Twitter, Tumblr, flickr and so on. It’s all there in the top right hand corner!

I will be removing the GFC widget in the New Year to stop any more people signing up, so please do switch over!

oh god that sucks! That’s my main source of followers – not signing up for google plus either – sounds creepier than facebook and they refuse to let you use psuedonyms which might mean blogging under a nom de plume will become an issue for bloggers who which to remain anonymous. Thanks for alerting people to this. Where did you read this was going to happen?

I hadn’t really payed that much attention on what was going on with Google. Hopefully this won’t affect me too much as I have just swapped over from Blogger so didn’t have many followers and don’t use it for following blogs anyway.

Google figured out that this feature is valuable to people, so they’ve decided to get all proprietary with it. Not a great way to spread good will about your brand, but it may not matter much, unltimately. Following has become so decentralized — with Twitter, Bloglovin, RSS feeds, email subscriptions, etc. etc. I’ve been Wordpress all along, so I’ve always had decentralized followers in this way. It makes it a little harder to know how many are really following, but maybe I shouldn’t obsess about this anyway! But you have all these other following systems in place, and now you’re getting the word out to your readers. If others do what you’re doing, they should all be fine.

I saw this, via IFB. Supposedly it hasn’t been “successful” for Google?! Bloody beaucratic bollocks!
Not sure if I’m concerned or not, really!Am just going to leave it for now,and think about it next year.
As I don’t have a business to promote through having lots of followers,it isn’t a big deal for me.
Having followers has just been a thrill!

This has annoyed me no end, but since I moved my blog to Word press Ive not had many sign up GFC anyway its all been email or facebook! But they are really making the divide between blogger and other platforms bigger, I think they will regret it as GFC was one of the only good things about blogger!

I’ve been really good at keeping up when people syndicate their blogs on Facebook’s Networked Blogs. any other way – I can’t keep up.
