This is from the beginning of July and my last trip back to Edinburgh for my firen’s 30th birthday party. Her surname’s White, so she had a white themed party, with white food and a white dress code. Which to be honest, no one really paid much attention to., most girls either just had a tiny white accessory or a little bit of white in a print, while most guys didn’t bother at all.

Dave and I went for it though. He wore his cricket whites and his cycling jacket, while I recycled a load of wedding stuff. Those are my wedding shoes, shawl and earrings, just the dress is different and the hair a lot more casual!

The dress is new to me though. It was given to me by my uncles mum, who had held onto many old things, much to her son’s chagrin, but is willing to let them go now she’s found out we love old things and will use them. She gave me a suit from the forties, a dress form the 50s and one from the 80s, and this 60s dress.

Initially, I just tried things on to humour her, because I never expected anything to fit, since she’s both shorter and skinnier than me, but miraculously it did! The skirt of the suit is dangerously tight, but apart from that, everything’s great. This dress was the biggest thing, and the way it’s cut wuth a very high waist is quite accommodating of bumpage. In fact, I don’t look pregnant at all really! It’s also quite large around the boobs, and there’s some weird sticking out going on with the darts, so I think once I’m back in a stable body shape, I’ll have it altered to fit me. But for now it was just fine.

Outfit stats:
* dress – gift * shawl – cheap import shop * shoes – clarks

    You look lovely, I always think it is a shame when someone organises a themed party and no one actually turns up dressed up. I love any chance to play dress up again. You’ll be happy to know we actually had some sun in Edinburgh over the weekend so your prediction about it getting better in time for you to move back might be coming true xo

    Franca–this dress is just gorgeous on you and the story that’s attached to it is amazing. I had thought that these must be photos from before you were expecting. And the portrait shot? You are glowing.

    You look fabulous! I wonder if she got married whilst visibly pregnant in that dress? That could explain it being a little bigger than the other things, and the hiding-whilst-accommodating-bump.

    My then-future husband and I once went to an all white party, but as I had literally no white garments to my name and he non other than a shirt, we did all black instead. We were definitely the odd ones out in that instance though, good on you for going for the white!

      Nope, it’s actually the suit she got married in, in 1948. Well, she got married in a big fluffy white dress, but back then you would go to the registry office the following day to tell the state about your marriage, so she wore the suit for that. And it’s the smallest thing!

    That dress is fabulous. The thing with the darts may be because they wore different shaped bras in the 50s that made their breasts look quite pointy, so the darts accomodate that.

    I hate it when at themed parties people don’t bother in going along with it… however you both did – and you look specially lovely in that dashing vintage dress. I have a soft spot for vintage dresses.
