Milo week 9-12 , Google Reader apocalypse, hat giveaway and job news

weeks 9-12

He’s growing up, if not growing big. Still 9th percentile, but at least he’s steady, and he’s doing well. Our main news with him at the moment is that we are trying to introduce a bedtime routine, with mixed results. We do get him to sleep before us every night, but it can take about two hours from when I give him his bath at seven to when he finally settles, and we are yet to do it without topping him up with the bottle after breastfeeding, which then of course means that I somehow have to find some milk to express during the day, which then makes me feel like I’m catching up all day. But I shouldn’t complain too much, he is very very good really, and has started taking more regular naps in his crib during the day, and he’s getting to the point where he can entertain himself with his baby gym as well.

I’ve also got quite a lot of German kiddies songs memorised now, so he’s getting some culture too. Some of them are so depressing though. There’s one about a fox being shot for stealing geese, one about a sister not recognising her brother, and my absolute favourite, ‘Oh Du lieber Augustin’ which, in it’s entirety goes: “Oh dear Augustin, everything’s destroyed, you’ve got no money, you lost your bag and you’re lying in the dirt.” (There’s some nice ones about sick bunnies being cured and birds getting married too!).

Google Reader

As you will probably all know by now, Google is shutting down Google Reader. I’m not quite sure yet what alternative I’ll go for, I’ve had a few people recommending Feedly, though I’m not sold on the magazine layout. There’s some recommendations in this article, and a full(ish) list here, so I guess I’ll have to play around. One good thing about all of this is that at least I’ll be able to get rid of some of the defunct blogs I have in my reader from when I was on blogger, and can’t unsubscribe to.

Anyway, most blogs I read seem to be recommending bloglovin, so I guess I will too. You can follow using the button on the left hand side, or here’s the link. I actually noticed that if you search for oranges and apples on the blogloving website, four versions of my blog appear, three with this URL and one with the old blogspot one. They do all show the same thing, so I guess it doesn’t matter, but maybe follow the one with the 100 followers, not the ones with 6.

Also a wee reminder that I’m giving away this handmade baby hat. I guess the baby size and it having pink in it (though I think it’s boy suitable personally!) make the market for this pretty small, so there’s only four entries so far. So you’re in with a good chance if you do like it!

Job news

Finally I wanted to say I got through to the assessment centre for that promotion board at work. It sounds incredibly gruelling, I had been hoping they would do it over two separate days, but it’s all in one day. Not ideal for a breastfeeding person to be honest, and I’m not sure I can concentrate for six hours. I don’t have a date for the assessment centre yet (they’re telling us tomorrow), but just to prewarn you in case I disappear off the face of the earth again, that’ll be why.

its all go here πŸ™‚ good luck with your assessment, I’m sure you’ll get through it and do fantastically.

I’m using bloglovin and I really like it – its simple and the bar along the top to go through blogs is really handy for commenting and seeing the whole blog rather than just the feed.

Man, Milo is looking like a big boy. Looking the newborn look as he leaves the “fourth trimester” (is that a thing in the UK as well? People love it here). Such a cutie!
I thought about entering the giveaway, but our little fella will be born in hot, humid sticky NYC summer. Do they need hats when it’s hot? I don’t even know. (We don’t use A/C so he won’t need to be warmed up in artificial cool)

Ah Milo is so cute! He’s obviously thriving on a cultural diet of depressing German children’s songs πŸ™‚

Just a quick tip about Bloglovin – I had the same problem with multiple blog feeds. I contacted them through the website to tell them, and someone merged all the feeds into one about two hours later and contacted me to let me know (they combined all the followers too so I didn’t lose any).

I’m not massively impressed with it as a reader, but it was great how quickly they responded and sorted out the problem. I’m still mourning Google Reader though.

Yes, i heard about google reader disappearing – i will also be using bloglovin althought i am not a fan, i am not very good with new things so it will probably take a while before I can get the hang of it.
And in regards to your blog being there several times, you can write to bloglovin and they will “consolidate it “into one account , i had the same issue and they fixed it.
