It’s just a little bit of history repeating…

You know what makes me feel old? That nineties fashions are back. The other way we were walking and there was a gaggle of about eight teenage girls hanging out in the street and every single one of them was wearing cutoff jeans or short shorts made to look like cutoff jeans, with tights. Every.single.one.

It reminds me so much of what everyone used to wear to parties when I was 13. It was like a uniform: Black tights, denim cutoffs, black top. It’s so weird that it’s coming back, in such a literal way.

One thing that was also in fashion at the time (often worn together with the shorts) that I hope never comes back is what was called bodys in German, basically leotards with poppers between the legs. What was the point of that? They were never worn on their own, Jane Fonda style, it was always under something, so basically as a top. I’m not sure why that seemed such a good idea at the time, when you might as well have just worn a top.

I was looking for a current example, but all the girls in the streetstyle pictures were so thin that I didn’t feel it was an accurate representation of what I saw in the street. This is Scotland, you can’t say that many girls seem to be held back from wearing whatever is fashionable by being a bit chunky. So anyway, I went for a vintage pin-up picture instead (source)

I always find how fashion repeats itself so fascinating, however I do feel old when I see fashion from the 90s being sold as vintage.

The things that are amazing me are the bulldog hair clips and the scrunchies, I really didn’t like those in the 90’s and I still don’t know – so at least I’m consistently unfashionable 🙂 I am enjoying the ruck sack revival though.

I remember Ra Ra skirts in my teens. Thanksfully they haven’t come back.

Hi Franca, I’ve thought about the whole 90s resurgence thing, and I remember how much (back in the 90s) fashion was influenced by music….when I think of cutoffs and opaque tights, I think of grunge, or whatever the correct term is. Why has the fashion come back now? Is it the recession? How can it be redone in the 20-teens without the same musical or cultural influence?
So many questions, and I want someone smart to answer them, because I am confused. We called those hideous things bodyshirts, and yes I had one, that i ended up cutting the bottom off…in order to make a – crop top – another 90s trend.

I’ve spotted a few girls wearing things that I used to wear in the 90s and thought ‘ugh’, I really find so much of that fashion ugly and yes it makes me feel old too! Things like crop tops are made for teenagers anyway, no way am I going to go back there. It’s a shame when I visit Topshop because I feel incredibly out of touch, like there is nothing for me in there. Luckily I can sew what I want to wear.

The leotards with poppers underneath came back when I was at uni!! I knew a bunch of girls at the time who wore them… but I have no idea why! They can’t have been comfortable, how can you ensure with something like that that it will be neither too long nor too short for your torso? (both ending very badly for the wearer.)

I loved wearing leotards with my big old leotards–but I liked the dancers type and NOT those with the snaps in the crotch.

I often wear 1990s bodies (the garments with the poppers) and vintage leotards under clothes. I love both the sleek fit which looks brilliant with a high waisted maxi skirt and how warm they are on cold nights at festivals.
Fashion always repeats itself, it never makes me feel old though. x

Oh, the bodysuits! I can remember being trapped in the toilets at school discos desperately trying to pop them back together whilst everyone else was dancing to The Timewarp in the hall. The agonies of youth!
