For Dave’s birthday I gave him a slab building pottery course at Cyan Clayworks and booked myself in at the same time. It’s such a luxury to spend all day making! Pottery is probably not really my craft, I’m too slapdash for it, you want things to look really tidy really, but it was fun! We used slip to add the colours, which is clay mixed with pigment, so you only have to fire it once, rather than firing it, glazing it then firing it again, though evrything is glazed with a clear glaze over the slip. We make quite a lot of things which are now distributed around the flat mixed in with the bought pottery. I’m quite pleased with some of it, others not so much. Dave’s look better than mine (he made the lace pot, fish plate, knot tile and fish), and the mug I made is essentially useless, as all the stuff I scratched into it makes it really uncomfortable to drink from. Still though, was a fun day even if everything had turned out looking awful!
